Steve's Blog: Chris Brown's "Fine China" Music Video

Choreographers Rich and Tone contacted me to submit dancers to audition as triad gang members for Chris' new music video that was part dance and part fighting.  I worked for Rich and Tone on the upcoming movie "Battle of the Year: The Dream Team" and the Black Eyed Peas "Pump It" music video and we had been talking about collaborating in the future.  It panned out that this was a perfect match for me to be the fight choreographer =)

A ton talented dancers were in the audition but there were many different cuts for different reasons like look, choreography skill, freestyle skill, and athleticism.  In the end, 3 of 4 of my picks booked the job (including Hok =P).  One thing I must say is that Chris Brown is extremely talented and hard working.  He picked up the fight choreography very quickly and took and worked on the notes that were given to him and it showed.  Hok impressed me with his reactions and timing for never doing fight choreography before.

Here are some pics from the shoot!

"Fine China" by Chris Brown ft. Hok & Steve

So about a month ago i got a call for an audition for a music video for Chris Brown. i hadn't been to a single audition in about 3 years so i must say i was pretty nervous going into it. i had been very fortunate for a while and had been quite a while since i was last put in that position where i had to "prove" myself.
the day of the audition, myself and aichi had some problems printing out our resumes (since we hadn't had to do it for a while) and ended up getting to the audition when they had already gone 1x8 counts into the piece.
not only was i tripping out about that, but i would see amazing dancers around me such as scotty nguyen, whyley, jp san pedro in super focus mode. that also did light a fire inside me tho :)
luckily, i was able to fit into one of the pieces they were looking for as a chinese triad gang member and was able to book the job!! pretty stoked i must say, to be able to be picked by talented people is truly an honour.
steve had told me that he would go to support but i guess the plan had kept changing, and in the end, he was given the position to choreograph the fight scene along with the amazing Rich & Tone.
after rehearsing for 3 days and waiting for 12 hours on set, we nailed our scene pretty quickly, and i am very happy with the out come!! it was my first time to ever try a proper fight sequence like this, but i must say it was super fun and i also gained a billion trillion more times respect to steve... and Jackie Chan haha.
i say Quest Crew should make a fight sequence video... what do you all think?

SkyBlu and Feng on the Jay Leno Show

Unfortunately, we couldn't just embed the musical performance.  If you want to skip ahead, SkyBlu and Feng go on at the 36:51 mark.

Feng's comments on this performance:

It's SkyBlu's first american debut as a solo artist and i am grateful that i had the opportunity to direct and choreograph his first national tv debut! ... and Jay Leno is a really nice guy.
